What to wear on the bike

Here are some suggestions on what to wear while riding and things to pack on your bike so that you have a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

Bike shorts (or knicks as they are commonly called)
are much more practical for cycling than regular clothing. They are made of lycra, a fabric that stretches with your leg movement. They usually have a padded crotch insert that takes the ouch out of sitting on a bike saddle. You don’t need underwear with cycling shorts but you will have to wash them overnight unless you pack extra pairs. If you bring a minimum of two pairs of shorts and wash one pair at the end of each day, you should always have one pair to wear and one pair drying out.

Cycling tops or t-shirts are cool and comfortable to wear. Wear long sleeved shirts to protect your arms from sunburn or use lots of +30 sunscreen. Cycling tops are made from material which wicks away moisture and always feel dry on the skin. They also have useful pockets at the back so you can store small items such as wallet/purse, snack bars and even your mobile phone. You can usually get by with two shirts if you wash out your shirt at the end of each day. Why not order a great new 2007 commemorative jersey to ride in this year.
Shoes or riding sandals should be comfortable and stiff soled. Sandshoes or runners will do but the stiffer the sole the better. Shimano SPD sandals and pedals are a good way to feel warm air between your toes. Sandal wearers are advised to protect the tops of their feet by using suncream. On cooler mornings a pair of socks will keep your sandalled feet warm until the day warms up. SPD pedals are more comfortable to use and easier to get into and out of than toe clips and straps.

Bicycle helmet -
It is a legal requirement in NSW that you wear a bike helmet. It also makes good sense to protect your head. Make sure the straps are firmly adjusted so that the helmet sits squarely on your head, not tilted back at the front. All helmets should contain the Australian Approved Safety Mark.

Sports sunglasses
(especially the special cycling glasses that fit close to your eyes and wrap around) protect your eyes from UV glare, dust, insects and the wind.

Water bottle -
bring two 750ml water bottles and keep them replenished throughout the day. Drink constantly during your ride. We recommend that you drink at least 5 litres of water during each day’s ride. A hydration fuel added to your water will help you maintain hydration better in the heat and over long distances.

Wet/windy weather gear -  Be prepared for cold and wet weather. Pack a waterproof jacket and dress in layers so that you can easily discard clothing when the day warms up. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us but the ride goes on rain or shine.

Food (road rations) - We recommend that you always carry some high energy food to supplement your normal meals. If you run into headwinds or use up more energy riding between the rest stops, you can easily stop and fuel up with your own supplies. Also carry a few dollars for some great food at the rider reviver stations supplied by local schools and community groups along the way.

Sun protection - We recommend that during daylight hours you wear sunglasses and protect your exposed skin from the strong Aussie sunshine by using lots of SPF30+ UV sun cream. The Big Ride Shop on campsite will sell supplies of sunscreen but we recommend that you always get used to carrying your own supplies.

Money to buy food, refreshments and souvenirs - Lunch is supplied to you during the day (except on rest day) but you will have to pay for all other food and drink along the cycle route. Morning and afternoon teas are organised by local community groups and the money you pay for tea, coffee, cakes and slices goes to help their group.

Reusable cup for morning and afternoon tea breaks - Help the environment and bring a reusable cup with you.

Lights - The NSW Big Ride cycle route is only open during daylight hours but we recommend you all have a back flashing light and front white light on your bikes should adverse weather conditions close in, we have had early morning river fog on previous rides.
